Benzoyl peroxide is one of the most common ingredients in acne-fighting skincare products. That’s because it has antibacterial properties and can kill some of the bacteria that cause acne.
It’s good for mild to moderate acne treatment, especially acne that is inflammatory in nature.
Benzoyl peroxide works by killing Propionibacterium acnes, a bacteria that causes acne breakouts. P. acnes is present in various parts of our body, but mostly on skin. It’s an anaerobic bacteria, meaning that it grows or thrives in an environment without oxygen.
When benzoyl peroxide is applied to skin, it decomposes and releases oxygen. This kills the P. acnes bacteria and helps reduce breakouts as a result.
Another effect of benzoyl peroxide is that it increases the turnover rate of epithelial cells, which make up the skin’s epidermis or outer layer. As a result, skin may peel after using benzoyl peroxide as dead skin cells get removed. Clearing out dead skin cells helps clear pores and prevent blockages that can lead to future breakouts.
Benzoyl peroxide often comes as a gel with concentrations of 2.5% to 10%. It’s best to start with a lower concentration at first so you can monitor how your skin reacts.
Usually you’ll be instructed to apply a thin layer of the benzoyl peroxide product after washing your face. It may be used once or twice daily depending on the product.
Because benzoyl peroxide can cause peeling, start with fewer applications and increase gradually as your skin adjusts to the product.
These are just general directions so be sure to always follow the instructions that come with a specific product.
It’s best to avoid direct sunlight when using benzoyl peroxide products. Apply at nighttime or if you’re using it during the day, don’t forget to wear sunscreen with at least SPF 30.
Benzoyl peroxide also has bleaching properties. Be sure to wash hands thoroughly after applying so that it doesn’t get on your clothes or hair.
Results won’t happen immediately. Wait a couple weeks to see how your skin responds and whether there’s any improvement in your acne. If you don’t see an improvement, you could talk to your doctor or dermatologist about other options.
Dryness and peeling skin are the most common side effects of using benzoyl peroxide.
Otherwise, some people may experience irritation, itching, redness, or even pain. If you’re experiencing severe side effects, stop using the product and consult with your doctor.
Benzoyl peroxide can be a powerful acne-fighting agent but be sure to follow the instructions when using. As with any new skincare product you’re introducing to your routine, start small with smaller concentrations and fewer applications and increase gradually.
Allergic reactions to benzoyl peroxide are rare but they can happen. Get help immediately if you think you’re having a severe allergic reaction.
You can find benzoyl peroxide in over-the-counter products like Clearasil and many other gels, lotions, creams, face washes, and body washes.
