Benefits of niacinamide for skincare

Here’s an introduction to niacinamide and what it can do for your skin.

You may have seen the ingredient “niacinamide” in your skincare products and wondered what it was.

Niacinamide is a form of niacin (vitamin B3). Most people get all the niacin they need from their regular diet and it functions to keep our nervous system, digestive system, and skin healthy. It’s found in foods like meat, fish, milk, eggs, and beans.

Niacin comes in two forms: nicotinic acid and niacinamide (also known as nicotinamide). Niacin in the body is converted into a coenzyme called nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD). A coenzyme is a protein that helps enzymes function. Enzymes are proteins that help biochemical reactions in our body. Because of its role in biochemical reactions, niacinamide can have positive effects on our skin.

When applied topically, some of the benefits of niacinamide include:

  • Reduced hyperpigmentation
  • Reduced fine lines and wrinkles
  • Anti-aging properties
  • Improved skin elasticity
  • Mild exfoliation

While scientists are still investigating exactly how niacinamide brings about these benefits, early research is promising.

A 2000 study of 18 Japanese women with hyperpigmentation found that their skin showed significant lightening after eight weeks of using 5% niacinamide.

Another study, done in 2004 with 50 white women, found that 5% niacinamide applied twice daily reduced fine lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation and blotchiness.

Another benefit of niacinamide is that unlike its sister compound nicotinic acid (the other form of niacin or B3), niacinamide does not cause side effects like skin flushing when taken in the right dose.

You’ll likely find niacinamide mixed with other ingredients in skincare products.

While topical niacinamide is safe for most people, check with your doctor before trying any oral supplements. Oral niacinamide should not be taken at a dose higher than 35mg per day, according to the National Institutes of Health. Higher doses could result in side effects like an upset stomach, gas, or dizziness.

Alpha uses niacinamide in its prescription acne and anti-aging skincare products. If you’re seeking treatment for other medical conditions, get started today for online consultations, free messaging to our doctors, and medications mailed straight to your door.
